In a combat against mosquito breeding sites, as a preventive measure for vector-borne diseases such as Dengue, Chikungunya and Zika, the Ministry of Health of Yucatan (SSY) will carry out this 3, 4, 10 and 11 of March the first massive elimination of mosquito breeding sites in Merida and its nearby towns.
The director of Prevention and Health Protection of SSY, Manuel Paredes Aguilar, reported that more than 1,570 workers supported by 340 dumpers and more than 80 supervisory vehicles will participate in the campaign. The head of the agency, Jorge Eduardo Mendoza Mézquita, and the medical sub-delegate of the Institute of Security and Social Services of State Workers (Issste), José Iván Aguilar Vivas, Aguilar Paredes said that epidemiological week number 7 does not present any case of dengue, zika and chikungunya in Yucatan, but despite this situation, the state authorities cannot “lower their guard”.
“The culture of prevention demonstrated by citizens must continue and must be encouraged,” he added.
The deputy director of Public Health of the same agency, Mirza Tec Kumul, explained that the incidence of dengue cases has been reinforced by the vector personnel strategy that monitors the behavior of Aedes aegypti, because by being found, it is controlled and eliminated by means of ovitraps.
The official added that the work in the Merida municipality and surrounding communities will benefit 193,400 families and will take place on March 10 and 11 (Saturday and Sunday).
The tasks of “descacharrización” in the Yucatecan capital will be carried out Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 March,, which will serve 278 colonias and 230,720 homes all over Mérida. According to officials the program will benefit more than 1,167,000 people.
The head of the Vector Control Department, Jorge Alfredo Palacio Vargas, indicated that the staff will operate from 8 am to 3 pm. Palacio Vega asks the population to place their pots outside one day in advance (today Friday March 2), and not do it after the truck has passed already, because it causes health problems to other residents.
Eduardo Batllori Sampedro attended the press conference, on behalf of the head of the Department of Urban Development and Environment (Seduma).
