In order to continue with the preservation of culture and traditions, Congresswoman Carmen González Martín presented an initiative to declare the Vaquería as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of the State of Yucatán.
During her participation in the session of the Yucatan Congress, the legislator explained that the vaquerías are traditional festivities that take place in the 106 municipalities of the state.
They include religious worship, dance, and music and Yucatecans proudly wearing the typical costume of the region.
“We are fortunate to have a great cultural richness, the result of a mixture between the ancestral indigenous legacy and Spanish culture by having several traditions and customs typical of the state,” he added.
“It has its origins in colonial times and it was celebrated on the occasion of branding the cattle of the haciendas” he related.
He noted that the intangible or immaterial cultural heritage also gathers the different expressions and manifestations of the life of the people.
He described that the vaquería demands the fulfillment of protocols that are observed with respect, such as the roar of the Voladores or pyrotechnic rockets.
He also highlighted the host called “Bastonero” who welcomes groups of dancers from other municipalities.
The deputies Esteban Abraham Macari, Karla Franco Blanco, Fabiola Loeza Novelo, Crescencio Gutiérrez González, Melba Gamboa Ávila, Jesús Pérez Ballote, Manuela Cocom Bolio and Erik Rihani González joined this initiative.
