Chichén Itzá is still ranked as the archaeological zone that receives the most visits in the country, but it had a drop in its affluence of 21.8 percent of national and foreign visitors, from January to June 2023, compared to the same period last year, according to the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH).
The main drop was 40.9 percent of national tourism, since it went from 721,033 visitors to 426,114 in 2023; its international tourism registered 669,822 people in 2022 and 661,452, that is, 1.2 percent less.
However, at least five archaeological sites in the Yucatan Peninsula are among the top 10 most visited: Chichén Itzá in first place, Tulum in third, Uxmal in seventh, Ek Balam in ninth and Chacchoben in 10th place.
Tulum also had a drop in domestic or local tourism, from 322,415 visitors from January to June 2022, it had 301,032 in the same period of 2023, which reflects 6.6 percent less; however, in the case of foreigners there was an increase of 31.5 percent, from 353,326 to 464,478.
The archaeological zone of Ek Balam is the one with the greatest increase in both national and foreign visitors, 31.2 percent more, to account for a total of 104,025 people who came to this zone.
Outside the top ten it is at number 13, San Gervasio, Quintana Roo, but it is the second area with the highest increase also among the sites in the Yucatan peninsula. It grew 21.2 percent to reach a total of 74,520 national and foreign visitors.
The seven archaeological zones of the peninsula, three from Yucatan and three from Quintana Roo, received a total of 2,249,344 visitors, a lower figure of 155,875 nationals and foreigners during the first half of last year.
