The cement company Cemex has initiated a process to obtain permits and establish its own quarry zone in Tulum, similar to what Calica has been operating in Solidaridad for several years.
The private company has submitted an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to obtain permits from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat). They anticipate an investment of three million pesos if approved by the federal agency.
The private entity aims to establish the quarry on a parcel of land of approximately six hectares in the community of Francisco Uh May, on the western outskirts of the municipality of Tulum, which connects to localities in the neighboring state of Yucatán.
The project involves the dry extraction of quarry materials from the project named “Establishment and Operation of a Materials Bank with Crusher and Screening Plant.” This project is focused on the extraction, exploitation, and utilization of soil resources, particularly quarry materials.
It is worth noting that currently, Cemex is the main supplier of concrete for the federal Tren Maya project in this part of Quintana Roo. Particularly, there is an expectation of even stronger real estate growth in Tulum, where the Mexican government is constructing the railway project and the International Airport for the region.
At the moment, the application has only been received by Semarnat, and according to environmental law regulations, it is expected to be approved or rejected, as the case may be, in approximately six months.
It should be noted that Cemex, like other private entities in this industry, also relied on the quarry materials extracted by Calica south of Playa del Carmen, where there is currently an international dispute.
