Mexico’s Ministry of Health reports the first case of Zika in 2024

The Ministry of Health (SSA) reported the first confirmed case of Zika virus in Mexico in 2024, which belongs to a citizen from Oaxaca.

In the last Epidemiological Bulletin issued by the Ministry of Health, with information from week 11, from March 10 to 16 of this year, it was specified that it is a man.

Local media reported that this is a 58-year-old man, a resident of the municipality of San Juan Guichicovi, located in the northern area of the Tehuantepec isthmus, who remains hospitalized and is in stable condition.

The National Epidemiological Surveillance System of the SSA, in the section on vector-transmitted diseases, indicates that so far in 2024, no cases of Chikungunya virus have been recorded, a disease also transmitted by female mosquitoes of the Aedes aegypti species. and that causes similar symptoms.

In Mexico, in 2023 no case was reported officially and in 2022, 3 cases were reported.

According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), the Zika virus is transmitted mainly through mosquitoes of the Aedes genus, which bite mainly during the day.

The majority of infected people are asymptomatic, and those who do present symptoms usually manifest:

  • Rashes.
  • Fever.
  • Conjunctivitis.
  • Muscle pains.
  • Articular.
  • General discomfort.
  • Headaches.

Pregnant women are usually considered a risk population since Zika can cause microcephaly and other congenital malformations, as well as premature births and spontaneous abortions.
