In a cordial atmosphere, staff from the Directorate of Prosperity and Economic Wellbeing of the Mérida City Council held a draw among 33 fried food vendors from Mérida on Sunday to define its location in the Plaza Grande.

Each of the participants took a piece of paper from a container, which indicated the space it would occupy along 63rd Street.

After the process that lasted about an hour, the bidders, amidst applause, expressed their agreement with the space they were given.

As occurred in the meeting that was held with the food vendors, the Economic Wellbeing Prosperity officials reminded them that, as part of the new rules for being in Mérida on Sunday, they must take care of the environment.

“All those who handle oil cannot under any circumstances throw it into the ground, flowerbeds or sewers… The first person we see doing something like this, we are going to sanction,” they were warned.

“Okay… Perfect!” was the response of the vendors who offer, among other products, elotes, esquites, French fries, churros, and marquesitas. How will the burnt oils be handled? It was reported that each seller will place it in closed and safe containers and talks are underway with ServiLimpia, which, everything seems to indicate, will be the company in charge of collecting them, in order to give them adequate disposal and treatment.

They were also told that they must be uniformed, women with their huipil and men with guayabera. Although at first there was resistance from some, everyone agreed that the rules must be respected.

As we reported, last Sunday, September 29, Mérida on Sunday returned again to the Plaza Grande but with half of the merchants. This Sunday the 6th everyone will be there.
