Izamal’s Tren Maya station looks almost deserted

After the inauguration of the Maya Train by the federal government last December, the town station registers few passengers. In the terminal, guarded by the National Guard, only three people were observed buying tickets last February 28.

At the beginning of March, there will be a series of schedule changes, which will be announced on the official website.

Currently, the station’s schedules are 7 and 9 in the morning to Cancún and 9:32 and 11:30 in the morning to Mérida. It is expected that the number of passengers increase during the Easter holidays.

For local citizens, the Tren Maya offers a 33% discount on tourist and premier class tickets.

For seniors and people with reduced mobility, there can be a discount of 46%. Users can carry suitcases weighing up to 25 kilos, as well as a briefcase or backpack.

In the future, control filters with metal detector arcs will be installed at the station.

Due to the low passenger demand, some areas such as information, and medical services, among others, do not function in the terminal.

One of the problems for visitors who arrive at Izamel aboard the Tren Maya is that there is no transportation service such as taxis to get to the center, unless an acquaintance or family member comes to pick them up.

Travelers have to walk almost a kilometer from the station to the junction of the Citilcum-Izamal highway to take a taxi or public transportation to Izamal.
