In Yucatán, the salary gap persists; men earn 8.2% more

From January to February 2023, in the Yucatan Peninsula, 4 thousand 83 household workers have been incorporated into the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), of which 2 thousand 435 are women (59.6 percent) and 1 thousand 648 are men (40.4 percent).

In addition, according to February data, the average salary at which these domestic workers were registered with the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) is 247.30 pesos per day. However, when reviewing the figures by sex, men earn more than women, with a difference in favor of 6.9 percent, which in real terms translates into 17.80 pesos per day.

In terms of entities, Campeche has almost equal salaries between both sexes: in February, the 86 women registered in the IMSS registered an average salary of 241.30 pesos, while their male counterparts reported an overall income of 240.82 pesos, a difference in favor of women of 1.1 percent, which translates into 2.64 pesos more per day worked.

A breakdown of the data by IMSS sub-delegation shows that, in Ciudad del Carmen, 14 female employees reported an average daily income of 231.80 pesos, or 10.79 pesos more than the 221.01 pesos per day earned by 55 men (a 4.9 percent difference in favor of women).

However, in the city of Campeche, the 45 female domestic workers registered with Social Security earn 2.83 pesos less than their 44 male counterparts, 249.94 pesos versus 252.78 pesos.

On the other hand, in Quintana Roo the gender wage gap is much wider in the region, with a difference of 10.2 percentage points in favor of men. During February 2023, 239 female workers were registered with the IMSS, with an average salary of 233.58 pesos per month. 233.58 pesos per day, which is 21.83 pesos less than the 260.23 pesos reported by 110 male employees.

By sub-delegation, in Chetumal the gender wage gap widened 15.3 percent more, leaving women with 40.28 pesos less than their male counterparts, if we compare the 223.65 pesos reported by 45 female employees against the 263.93 pesos reported by 30 domestic workers.

A similar trend is observed in the Social Security sub-delegation in Cancun; in the second month of 2023, 157 women joined with an average daily wage of 247.49 pesos per day, 29.24 pesos less than the 276.73 reported by 55 men, which translates into a gap of 10.6 percentage points.

While in Playa del Carmen 37 women joined the IMSS with an average salary of 227.42 pesos per day and 25 men registered with the IMSS with an average income of 239.22, that is, the salary difference is 4.9 percent or 11.80 pesos per day worked.

Regarding the State of Yucatan, the gender wage gap found in the February report is 8.2 percent; on the one hand, 893 women reported daily earnings of 244.43 pesos on average, on the other hand, 655 men joined the Program with a daily salary of 266.26, that is 21.83 pesos per day more than women.

In this context, the Mérida Norte sub-delegation reports the greatest salary difference by gender: 561 women earn an average of 248.61 pesos, that is, 25.61 pesos less than the 274.22 pesos earned by 339 men (a difference of 9.3 percent in favor of men).

Thus, in Merida Sur, the gender wage gap was 6.8 percentage points, contrasting the 240.25 pesos per day earned on average by 332 women with the 257.64 pesos per day earned by 316 male household workers.
