López Obrador’s statements come after this week the SCJN revoked the suspension that prohibited the Monumental Plaza de Toros México from scheduling bullfights since June 2022.

On Friday, Deember 8th, the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, proposed a citizen consultation to resolve the debate on bullfighting in Mexico City.

“Even though the legal process is not over, my recommendation is that a consultation be called in Mexico City. “In this case, it would be the best for everyone,” said the president during his morning press conference.

López Obrador’s statements come after this week the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) revoked the suspension that prohibited the Monumental Plaza de Toros México from scheduling bullfights from June 2022.

The Second Chamber of the Mexican Supreme Court (SCJN), the highest judicial body in the country, ruled to annul the suspension granted by a district judge to the protection filed against the popularly called Plaza México by the animal rights association Justicia Justa.

After the ruling, the largest bullring in the world and a reference for bullfighting in America will be able to offer bullfighting celebrations after more than a year of prohibition due to a precautionary suspension pending trial.

Given this, López Obrador recommended that citizens be consulted if they agree that bullfights should return to the Mexican capital, although he acknowledged that the first thing is to review whether it is legally possible for the consultation to be binding.

In addition, he promised that before the end of his administration, he would send a constitutional reform initiative for the protection of animals in the country.

Lopez Obrador stated that if the ban on bullfighting wins in the consultation, he will support making it a reality.

“I just need to know what others think because I represent the people,” he concluded.
