Because 74.3 percent of Yucatán’s population is Catholic, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), December 12, the Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe, is one of the most important religious dates.

Before and on the ephemeris, the Yucatecans carry out guilds, walks, pilgrimages and errands around the “birthday” of the also called “morenita del Tepeyac”; not in vain, for today, December 12, more than 70 permits were granted for street closures in different parts of the city and security and traffic operations were deployed, in coordination with the state and municipal police, informed Ignacio Gutiérrez Solís, director of Governance of the Mérida City Hall.

Gutiérrez Solís said that in the last few days another 45 requests were submitted to the municipal authority for consideration to block roads, but related to Christmas celebrations in general, from posadas to Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve celebrations, and even other patron saint festivities.

For today, he reiterated that 70 licenses were requested to use the streets as “party halls“; for this, the agency coordinated with the Secretariat of Public Safety (SSP), since, as is known, the range of action of the Municipal Police is limited to the first and part of the second square of the Yucatecan capital.

“Only for December 12 there are 70 permits that have already been granted, however, there are still other celebrations to be held, including patron saint festivities, community celebrations and others, however, for the framework of order we have had to coordinate with the State and Municipal police to control and avoid incidents, not only in the center of the city with the churches, but also in the various neighborhoods and subdivisions”.

Likewise, he commented that in order to request the permit a series of indispensable steps must be followed; but the most important is that all the neighbors agree with the event, since he assured that a single neighbor who does not want to stop the permit.

Requirements to request the closing of a street

“The requirements are: an identification of the person requesting the permit, second, the signature of all the neighbors of the street to be closed; I must emphasize that inspectors are sent to see if all are in agreement, and although we try to convince them, with one who does not agree the permit is not granted; third, the person who is going to close the street is instructed to contact the police for traffic issues”, he explained.
