Mexico has seen a dramatic increase in dengue this year

The federal Ministry of Health established that the increase in the number of dengue cases in Yucatán, compared to last year, already has exceeded one thousand percent.

According to the “Epidemiological Dengue Outlook” (Panorama Epidemiológico de Dengue), so far this year, 26,697 confirmed cases of dengue have been registered in the country, which represents an increase of 237.5 percent over the same period last year, when the figure was 7,911 patients infected.

So far, the States with the highest number of cases are:

  1. Veracruz: 7,222 cases (27.1 percent)
  2. Jalisco: 6,962 cases (26.1 percent)

Mexico City and Tlaxcala are the only two states with zero cases of dengue in the country, since Baja California already registered 2 cases this year.

The National Center for Preventive Programs and Disease Control (Cenaprece), explained that in the case of Yucatán, there are already 226 cases confirmed, which means an increase of over one thousand percent in comparison with the total cases confirmed during 2018.

In Quintana Roo there is a health emergency due to dengue, the state occupies the fifth national place, with 1,164 people infected, 4.4 percent of the national total.

While Yucatan is 15th place nationally, for the second consecutive week, with 0.85 percent of the national total, and Campeche, on place 20th, with 60 cases, 0.22 percent.

It is worth mentioning that absolutely no cases of Chikungunya or Zika have been registered in the Yucatan Peninsula so far this year.
