Yucatan is in second place nationally in the incidence of leukemia, cancer of the tissues that make up the blood, including bone marrow, with 15 cases detected (10 men and 5 women), according to information from the Federal Ministry of Health.
As of March 18, Jalisco heads the list with 22 patients, followed by Yucatan and Guanajuato (11). Campeche has three and Quintana Roo has two.
This type of cancer is the most common among children, and according to Natalia Negroe Ocampo, a specialist in Pediatric Oncology at the General Hospital “Dr. Agustín O’Horán” in Mérida, early diagnosis is possible by knowing the symptoms of the disease.
“The most common in children is leukemia, which usually presents with spontaneous bleeding, nosebleeds, bruises, enlarged lymph nodes or abdomen; secondly, brain tumors, which manifest themselves in headaches, vomiting, and staggering gait, and thirdly, lymphoma, detectable by the enlarged neck, persistent fever, low weight, and night sweats,” she explained.
For her part, Marissa Goff Rodríguez, president of the Asociación Mexicana de Ayuda a Niños con Cáncer (AMANC) Yucatán, pointed out that the timely detection of childhood cancer can change the course of this disease, since although the majority of children can be cured, the number can be higher and go from 70 to 90 percent of cases.
In general, the possibilities of overcoming the disease are greater in children than in adults, because 50% of the cases of cancer during childhood are due to acute lymphoblastic leukemia, with a high possibility of cure.
