

PUERTO MORELOS, Q. Roo — A peaceful demonstration was held in the seaside town of Puerto Morelos, south of Cancun, Sunday Nov. 12 by citizens who say they are concerned about the rise in crime.
Nearly 150 people from Puerto Morelos held a March for Peace on Sunday morning where they protested the increase of insecurity that is being felt throughout the municipality, riviera-maya-news.com reported. Attendees of the march said that a call was made to the general public to ask municipal authorities to recover the peace and tranquility in the town of Puerto Morelos.
Demonstrators said that in recent months, the town of Puerto Morelos has seen an increase in crime and violence that they do not want, noting a rise in home robberies and homicides that are allegedly linked to organized crime.
They were out to call upon authorities to provide more vigilance from the General Directorate of Public Safety and Traffic. Despite the annoucement by town mayor Laura Fernández Piña that there are more elements and patrols, the people of Puerto Morelos are requsting an even greater presence of the municipal police.
The last incident occurred in Puerto Morelos Saturday night when a man was shot inside a clothing store in front of the park of the Zetina Gasca colony.
According to unofficial figures, 23 people have been killed in the municipality of Puerto Morelos this year in crime-related violence.
