CANCUN — Cancun has become one of the favorite tourist destinations for Cubans, reports Mexican newspaper Milenio.
Among these Cubans who visit the turquoise beaches and attend the famous spas, mostly are private entrepreneurs, noted the Mexican press.
“The cost of my flight ticket to Cancun was $190 dollars and adding the lodging, everything came out almost cheaper than going to Varadero,” said 43-year-old José Arencibia, a telecommunications engineer, who runs a rental business by turning his in-laws’ garage into a lodging for tourists.
Arencibia explained that thanks to this business he was able to finance his trip and for the first time he knew another way of life”.

According to Cuban tour operators, “this summer Spain has become an international tourist destination for Cubans who have a great purchasing power. The package costs about $2,500 euros and includes the Schengen visa to enter Europe, the air ticket, four days in Madrid and two in Barcelona… and 99% returned to the island”.
Milenio recalls that the tour operator Havanatur inaugurated in 2014 this way of travel in Italy as a destination for Cubans residing on the island.
In addition to Cancun, according to Milenio, the preferred destinations by Cubans on the island are Madrid, Barcelona and Rome.
In January, Havana reported that between 2013 and 2016, more than 670,000 Cubans traveled abroad, 78% of whom did so for the first time and that only 9.6% of them emigrated, not returning to Cuba in the period of 24 months allowed by Cuban immigration law.
Likewise, internal tourism in the island has registered a “meteoric” increase: 991,122 nationals stayed in Cuban hotels in 2016.
