Tourism in Yucatán is on the rise, thanks to the promotion led by Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal.

It is evidenced by the fact that the state recorded its best September in history in terms of air passenger traffic, with a total of 267,733 people, representing a 4.9% growth compared to the same month in 2022, as reported by Grupo Aeroportuario de Sureste (ASUR).

According to the report, during the same period, the Manuel Crescencio Rejón International Airport in Mérida registered 246,828 domestic flight passengers, marking a 4.8% growth compared to September of the previous year. Additionally, there were 20,905 international passengers, representing a 5.3% increase from September 2022.

From January to September, the state saw a total of 2,689,837 passengers, marking the highest passenger traffic in the first nine months of a year on record.

During this time, passenger traffic at the Mérida International Airport showed significant cumulative growth of 25.8% compared to the same period in 2022.

In the same period, 2,445,615 domestic travelers were recorded, marking the highest domestic passenger traffic in the first nine months of a year on record and representing a 25.7% growth compared to the previous year.

Regarding international passengers, 244,222 were recorded, marking the highest international passenger traffic from January to September. This represented a cumulative growth of 26.7% compared to the same period of the previous year.

These results reflect the transformation of the tourism sector in the region, driven by Governor Vila Dosal, who has improved the variety of attractions in the area, promoted it, and enhanced air connectivity despite the challenges posed by the largest modern-day health crisis.

It is worth mentioning that in December of the previous year, the Governor presented a certificate to the 3 millionth passenger, Alberto Flores Torres, surpassing the previous record set in 2019 when 2.8 million passengers were recorded, highlighting the development and positioning of the destination.

Furthermore, Yucatán continues to increase its air connectivity by announcing new international flights connecting Mérida with the cities of Orlando and Miami in the United States. This will attract more tourists and economic contributions to the region, thanks to the Governor’s efforts and the promotion of Yucatán around the world.

As part of this increase in regional air connectivity, two direct routes were inaugurated: Guanajuato-Mérida, operated by Volaris and Viva Aerobús, as well as Mérida-Guatemala and Mérida-Flores by TAG Airlines, with 4 and 3 weekly flights, respectively, and competitive fares.

In addition, thanks to Governor Vila Dosal’s efforts, the region now has a new operating base or hub for Viva at the airport, with three planes overnighting in Mérida, increasing connectivity, and generating 600 jobs, both directly and indirectly.
