Father’s Day, which is traditionally celebrated on the third Sunday of June, brought a full crowd to the coastal area of this municipality, with at least 70,000 people, of which 30,000 remained in the stretch occupied by the two boardwalks.
From early hours of the day, this part of the city and port was invaded by dozens of families who visited the restaurants along the promenade and other establishments such as the municipal market “Francisco I. Madero,” filling up venues that had seen empty tables during the pandemic cycle caused by COVID-19 a couple of years ago.
Waiters and workers in the gastronomy sector noted that thanks to occasions like this, they see an increase of up to 40% in their earnings compared to a regular Sunday, as visitors not only come to enjoy the beach but also celebrate Father’s Day.
Another factor that benefited local businesses was the exponential arrival of members of the LGBT community who attended the diversity march over the weekend. This generated an occupancy rate of up to 70% in various hotels and rental houses located in the areas surrounding the boulevard.
In recent days, an interview was conducted with Manuel Contreras Alcalá, president of the Chamber of Commerce in the port, who specified that during special dates or periods that attract a massive influx of tourists, the hotel and gastronomy sectors are the ones that experience the highest demand. However, another significant source of income for Progreso comes from gas stations and recreational boat docking sites.
On the other hand, it was reported that the port once again received the arrival of artists, national athletes, and social media figures, whose fans wasted no time recognizing them in public and proceeded to ask for the long-awaited souvenir photograph.
One lucky individual was José Pérez “Tantan,” a delivery person from the “El Dorado” establishment, who was surprised when the order he went to deliver at the harbor turned out to be for Diego Laínez, the recent Mexican football champion with Tigres UANL.
The former Club América player and frequent national team member was at the pier located at the end of “Líbano” Avenue, and it was surprising that several fans didn’t realize he was there, even though he wasn’t wearing anything to conceal his features.
Upon realizing it was the player, the delivery person decided to deliver a couple of ceviches and take a photo, highlighting the kindness with which the famous athlete accepted the order. “I didn’t expect the young man to be so humble. Usually, when I encounter people from the entertainment world, I don’t talk to them, I just fulfill the orders. But this time, I decided to do it because I’m a fan of Club América,” said the port worker.
