What better way to create spaces for interaction than through art, where geographic and artistic borders intimately converse to shape a joyful aesthetic that uplifts and unites us?

This is how Yucatán and Cuba come together for the sixth edition of the cultural event where music, dance, theater, visual arts, literature, and gastronomy converge as part of the Cultural Autumn, as announced by the president of the Association of Cuban Residents in Mexico, Yucatán delegation, Pedro Juan de la Portilla, and the Cuban consul Raisel Calvo Margolles at the official launch of the event last Friday at Le Cirque Galería, whose owner, Jorge Gutiérrez Caraveo, has been involved in the project from the start and has provided facilities for Cuban artists’ exhibitions.

The consul expressed his gratitude for the presence of representatives from the Ministry of Culture and the Arts (Sedeculta) and the Autonomous University of Yucatán (Uady) and conveyed his satisfaction in continuing to strengthen the historical bond between the island and the Peninsula, as they share common elements, making him feel at home.

Amidst trio music, wine, and appetizers, the exhibition “Emociones Abstractas de Cuba” was inaugurated, featuring ten engravings and five canvases by the visual artist from Pinar del Río, Cuba, Miguel Ángel Couret Hernández, who highlighted “Cabalgando,” as it portrays the island of Cuba from one end to the other. In the same space, there are eight pieces by the sculptor from Santiago de Cuba, Jorge Antonio Jacas Vivanco “Jacas.”

The program includes an “Evening of Cuban Music and Gastronomy” at the same venue on Wednesday, October 18, at 8:00 PM, with a symbolic cost, concluding the celebration on October 20, the Day of Cuban Culture, with a “Literary Performance” in tribute to Cuban poets Elena Tamargo and Eliseo Diego.

Writer Ernesto Olivera Castro will open the event with profiles of their lives and works. In keeping with the brotherhood, at the same place and time, three Mexican writers will dramatize poems by Elena Tamargo. Mar Gómez will perform the poem “Síncopada o fuera de Tiempo,” directed by actress Hortencia Sánchez; Zindy Abreu will act “Habanera soy,” under the guidance of theater director Juan Ramón Góngora Alfaro, and Violeta Azcona will present the poem “Compás de espera.” Meanwhile, Cubans Pedro Juan de la Portilla and Carlos Sarmiento will pay tribute to Eliseo Diego.

Pedro Juan’s poem “Isla flotante,” which extols the nuances of Cuba as the “dormant alligator in the Caribbean,” and Carlos Sarmiento with his students from the Xpresión school will perform texts from the poetry book “En la calzada de Jesús del Monte.” Mérida and Cuba, face to face, sharing the same sea.
