Jobs for families throughout the state are becoming increasingly numerous and better, as from 2023 to 2025, the Walmart group will invest 1.275 billion pesos to establish 28 new stores in Yucatán. This will result in the creation of over 1,000 direct job opportunities in Espita, Dzidzantún, Motul, Peto, Tekax, Tizimín, Tzucacab, Acanceh, Tekit, and Mérida. This was announced by Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal and the President and CEO of the company in Mexico and Central America, Guilherme Loureiro.
From the company’s Distribution Center (Cedis), the Governor and the representative of Walmart Mexico and Central America presented the investment plan for 2023-2025 for the state, through which the company is expanding its presence in the state, particularly in the interior of the state, with the opening of 9 establishments.
From the company’s Distribution Center, the Governor stated that companies like Walmart do not come to Yucatán by chance but as a result of doing things right, offering legal certainty, security, and a well-qualified workforce.
In the presence of the Consul of the United States in Mérida, Dorothy Ngutter, and the mayors of Mérida, Renán Barrera Concha, and Kanasín, Edwin Bojórquez Ramírez, Vila Dosal asserted that when working as a team, realities can be transformed, and as evidence of this, the state is experiencing a historic moment.
In this regard, the Governor highlighted that 2021 has been the year with the highest economic growth in the history of Yucatán and the highest job creation. Meanwhile, 2022 was the year with the most foreign direct investment, the most tourists, and the safest.
Accompanied by the Secretary of Economic Promotion and Labor (Sefoet), Ernesto Herrera Novelo, Vila Dosal pointed out that his government is aware that what helps people lift themselves out of poverty is well-paying jobs, and as a result of this vision, family income in the country increased by 11%, but in Yucatán, it grew by 16%. Additionally, among the Yucatecans with the lowest incomes in the last 2 years, their salaries increased by 44%, whereas at the national level, it only increased by 17%.
Furthermore, he indicated that according to Coneval, in two years, 236,000 Yucatecans have been lifted out of poverty, which is 10% of our total population, and this is the minimum historical figure we have achieved in our entire history.
“This means that the strategy that has been implemented since the beginning of my government is yielding results because the best way to lift people out of poverty is with well-paying formal jobs and social security,” the Governor added.
Finally, Vila Dosal reiterated his commitment to continue creating the ideal conditions for world-class companies to want to come to the state and to provide them with all the support to realize their projects.
For his part, the President and CEO of Walmart Mexico and Central America stated that the new jobs to be generated by 2025 will add to the current 4,000 jobs and the 49 existing stores in the territory.
“Thank you, Governor, for your support and that of your entire team. We are excited to continue growing in the state and maintain our long-term commitment to helping families save money and live better,” he emphasized.
The Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs for Walmart Mexico and Central America, Javier Treviño Cantú, highlighted the support and closeness that the Government of Vila Dosal has maintained with the company, contributing to its growth and the creation of new permanent, formal job opportunities, implementing technology and contributing to the growth of Yucatán and the entire country.
“Yucatán is becoming an important attraction for national and international investments, which we celebrate and reiterate our intentions to continue growing in the state,” stated Treviño Cantú.
According to the growth plan, this year the goal is to open 4 stores, 2 Bodega Aurrera Express, and 2 Mi Bodega Aurrera. For 2024, the plan includes the creation of 15 establishments, of which 8 will be Bodega Aurrera Express, 5 Mi Bodega Aurrera, and 2 Walmart Express.
Finally, in 2025, the company plans to grow with 9 establishments, including 1 Bodega Aurrera, 5 Bodega Aurrera Express, 2 Mi Bodega Aurrera, and 1 Sam’s Club, creating 370 direct jobs.
Moments before, the Governor and executives toured the facilities of CEDIS Walmart Mérida, where they learned about the work being carried out in the workshop, the center point, the loading equipment area, and the receipt and shipping zones.
Walmart Mexico and Central America celebrates 28 years since its arrival in the state of Yucatán, with a historic investment of 5.7 billion pesos and the generation of 4,200 permanent direct jobs in its 49 units in the state. The company has a presence in 14 Yucatecan municipalities.
