Bars, restaurants and other businesses located in Cancun’s Playa Gaviota Azul, have been affected by the arrival of sargassum to the Quintana Roo shores, reporting losses of up to 95 % in sales, in a two-week period.
Jorge Antonio Gómez, an entrepreneur installed in Playa Gaviota Azul, is one of those who consider their businesses are at risk due to the large amount of sargassum on the beaches of Quintana Roo, especially those of Cancún.
Gómez has a crew of seven workers to clean up the area where his business is located so tourists can enjoy the beach and business owners can avoid the economic losses they have suffered in the last two weeks.

According to the entrepreneur, after Tropical Storm Alberto, sargassum arrived to the beaches in huge quantities, never seen before. The state government reported that until Sunday, June 24, 500 cubic meters of beaches covered with sargassum had been cleaned up.
The State Secretariat of Environment has indicated that in less than thirty days, work will begin on more than 38 kilometers of coastline, in seven different municipalities such as Isla Mujeres, Benito Juarez, Puerto Morelos, Solidaridad, Tulum, Othon P. Blanco , and Cozumel.
