PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Q. Roo — Playa del Carmen’s top politician is warning businesses of a zero tolerance policy for those who have yet to install security cameras.
Solidaridad’s municipal president Cristina Torres Gómez says that the owners of bars and restaurants are expected to provide the necessary security for patrons with the installation of cameras as agreed in May. She says that security cameras need to be installed inside and outside of establishments.
The warning comes after another shooting at a bar in Playa del Carmen during the early morning hours of Monday Oct. 9. A man was shot and killed at La Jarra while he sat at a table.
City Council says they will also maintain a policy of zero tolerance to officials who by their act or omission, put at risk the safety of residents and tourists of Solidarity.
In a press conference, the mayor announced the definitive removal of the prosecutor as well as of the officer of the Tourist Police responsible for the area where the bar La Jarra is located, which she says, was operating illegally after hours. She stated that the closing time (last call) for downtown businesses is 3:00 a.m. with the establishment emptied by 4:00 a.m.
Any business that violates the regulations will be sanctioned, she said, adding “We are not against these places of leisure as long as they comply with the regulations.
“We’ll say this very straightforward. This is the moment to choose what kind of destination we want to have and whether we are all working toward security. Inside a commercial establishment we must also be working toward security, which is a priority of the owners of each of the establishments.”
She said that surveillance will be permanently maintained in establishments such as bars, discos and nightclubs in order to ensure the safety of the population, including tourists and visitors to our destination.
