CANCUN — Nearly a week after 10 inmates escaped from a Cancun prison, authorities have yet to find eight of the dangerous gang members who made their July 12 jailbreak by jumping a wall and reportedly fleeing in taxis.
Meanwhile, state and national political officials are calling for a thorough investigation of the shooting deaths of Quintana Roo’s director of government and his bodyguard as they rode in a pickup truck in broad daylight on a street in a well-to-do Cancun neighborhood, as reported in The Yucatan Times July 15.
The search operation for the eight inmates still at large continued with participation of elements of Federal Gendarmerie, Ministerial Police and Municipal Police on the “Gasauto” road connecting with the Jose Lopez Portillo Avenue.
Over the weekend authorities continued patrols along the road known as “Gasauto” although no sightings were reported in the underbrush, without so far any news or capture of any of these fugitives.
These eight inmates escaped from prison last Tuesday July 12 with two other men who were arrested a day after their flight in Merida, Yucatan.
This operation began after a local resident gave notice to the authorities that eight subjects with the characteristics of the escapees tried to enter his property, so quickly the authorities arrived.
The property is located along the road called “Gasauto” located one kilometer from the Jose Lopez Portillo Avenue, and apparently the owner of this place threatened to shoot them if they did not leave the house, and they went down the hill.
The search involved about 30 local, state and federal police agents who conducted a sweep of the wooded area and underbrush until they reached the Lopez Portillo avenue without any result.
Regarding the murders of Quintana Roo Director General of Internal Affairs Isaias Capeline Lizarraga and his bodyguard, Angel Casillas, authorities are reportedly investigating the assassins’ presumed links to organized crime. No arrests have been made yet.
