Vandalism disturbs peace in the streets of Valladolid

VALLADOLID — Acts of vandalism are being carried out in the once quiet and peaceful streets of Valladolid.

A large number of tree planters along Calzada de los Frailes have been broken in recent days, leaving a mess, that brings a very negative image for tourists and residents as well. These planters that adorned the place, have been there for several years and had never been destroyed before, until a few days ago.

Apparently, this situation is due to lack of surveillance in the “barrios”, “colonias” and neighborhoods of this beautiful colonial city.

According to residents, police surveillance is scarce, and some of the police booths have even been closed down.

Calzada de los Frailes is a traditional colonial street lined up with colonial style houses, that went through a process of restoration with new paving, landscaping, streetlights, facades, cobblestones and planters with palm trees to offer a splendid and evocative image to the great number of tourists that walk along this noted avenue to get from the main square to the former Convent of San Bernardino of Siena, in the neighborhood of Sisal.

Residents of Valladolid say that agents of the Municipal Police pass by Calzada de los Frailes only once or twice during the night, so local gangs have enough time to carry out their acts of vandalism.
