Economic prosperity is forecast for both craft shops and restaurants.

After difficult months, the tenants of the commercial area of the archaeological zone of Tulum are beginning to see an improvement in the flow of visitors and therefore in their sales.

Pedro Canul Méndez, administrator of the Tulum Artisanal Center, stated that sales are currently up 60 percent compared to the low season, but he estimates that they can increase by over 85 percent after the first half of December.

The interviewee mentioned that they forecast economic prosperity for both craft shops and restaurants, tour modules, and the parking lot of the archaeological zone.

He pointed out that they also have to deal with the competition that usually appears during vacation periods, such as the case of the parking lots that are temporarily enabled due to the large number of vehicles.

He said that they also take into account that a significant amount of tourism comes through travel agencies, who manage all-inclusive packages for tourists and limit purchases in local businesses.

On the other hand, he explained that with the changes and measures implemented in the Jaguar National Park, the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas restricts the entry of certain items, such as plastic bottles.

In this sense, merchants have found sales alternatives with products such as thermoses and others for storing drinks, which along with glasses, hats, umbrellas, and skin care products are most in demand in stores.

“There has been a very slight increase in sales of basic items, small souvenirs, people are now looking a lot for thermoses for liquids, which they can bring into the archaeological zone due to all the changes that have occurred with the new administration since they no longer allow them to bring in plastic bottles and they look for other accessories, and all of this is reflected in local establishments,” Canul Méndez concluded.
