With two concerts where they will delight the public with Mozart’s Symphony 36 “Linz” and Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony 8, the Yucatan Symphony Orchestra (OSY) will close its 2024 season, under the baton of renowned maestro Jesús Medina, as guest conductor, this coming Friday, November 29 and Sunday, December 1, at the Palacio de la Música.

The Symphony in C major number 36 boosted Mozart’s fame for his natural talent and creativity since it was composed in just three or four days during his stay in the city of Linz, in adverse conditions before its premiere.

Invited to give a concert by Johann Joseph Anton, Count of Thun and former patron of Mozart, unprepared, the composer set out in a display of inspiration and work, creating one for the occasion that bore the name of the city that received him.

By the day of the premiere, the symphony was finished and the scores copied, Linz, with a cheerful and optimistic atmosphere in four movements such as Adagio – allegro spiritoso, Poco adagio, Menuetto, and Finale Presto.

“The marvel of Mozart’s genius that makes us enjoy an exquisite, delightful orchestration, sometimes it seems like a chamber piece, when he plays the symphonic part it sounds as if we were all playing,” said Jesús Medina.

“These are some of Mozart’s symphonies that are not played as often, but it is worth listening to because it is a very good work,” he added.

As a grand finale, the OSY will perform Symphony No. 8, in G major, by the Czech Antonin Dvorak, a work that is frequently programmed, although not as often as the ninth, and enjoys similar status to the seventh, despite the differences between the two works.

It should be noted that the seventh is tempestuous and romantic, while the eighth is tender and inspired by Dvorak’s traditional Bohemian music. In conjunction with a vigorous national language, the work presents various moods, arising in pastoral images, dances, and marches, even in dramatic moments.

This Symphony also stands out for four movements: Allegro con brio, Adagio, Allegretto grazioso – Molto vivace and Allegro ma non troppo.

“The genius of these composers is palpable, it is very enjoyable, the orchestra enjoys playing them, it is in very comfortable keys for the orchestra when playing Mozart’s Symphony in C major or Dvorak’s Symphony in G major. When the musicians are comfortable, because the tonality fits the violins, cellos, and wind instruments, everything fits together faster and we have a program to delight us, both the musicians on stage and surely the audience that accompanies us,” he said.

Director Jesús Medina has a professional career spanning three decades, where he has performed in more than 25 countries and has worked with several renowned artists.

The concerts will take place this Friday, November 29, at 8:00 p.m., and on Sunday, December 1, starting at noon. Tickets cost 400 pesos and are already available at the reception of the Palacio de la Música or on the OSY website.
