Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo.– Local taxi drivers attacked a group of innocent tourists in the parking lot of the Xcaret park in the municipality of Solidaridad after mistaking their vehicle for a chauffeur-driven application, which caused inconvenience in the business and tourist sectors of the Riviera Maya.

During the altercation, the taxi drivers vandalized the tourists’ vehicle, broke one of the vehicle’s windows with stones and even a bullet hole appeared in the bodywork after the damage was assessed.

The incident caused panic among tourists who did not understand the reason for the attack, as they were on vacation in the Mexican Caribbean.

In light of the events, Cesar Navarro Medina, president of the National Chamber of the Restaurant and Seasoned Food Industry (Canirac) issued an urgent call to the authorities to implement firm and effective measures against the taxi drivers involved.

He stated that this type of violent act seriously damages the image of one of the most important tourist destinations in the Riviera Maya.

The head of Canacintra also questioned the management of Luis Herrera Quiam, general secretary of the Playa del Carmen Taxi Drivers Union.

Herrera Quiam has not taken the proper actions, and in a statement about this aggression, he appeared to be uninformed and reluctant to comment on the events.

Navarro Medina added that this type of violence not only puts tourists at risk but also raises questions about security and order in one of the most visited destinations by national and international travelers.

It should be noted that taxi drivers in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum have been constantly involved in acts of violence recently.

Last October, the leader of the Tulum taxi drivers was arrested for being involved in a multiple homicide linked to organized crime and this month the leader of the Cancun taxi drivers was arrested, along with five accomplices, also taxi drivers, accused of the kidnapping and murder of two taxi drivers and a collaborator of the Cancun Taxi Drivers Union.
