More than 10 million kilos of plastic waste are generated per month in the state of Yucatan.

This makes it one of the most affected by pollution, according to the specialist of Cinvestav Mérida, Dalila Aldana Arana, who warns about the serious consequences of the problem, which goes beyond the aesthetic, affecting public health, aquifers, and marine biology.

She pointed out that the lack of environmental education and the scarce actions to avoid the excessive use of plastics have turned the state into one of the most affected by plastic pollution, which makes it an increasingly dirty place.

She indicated that currently, we live in a dirty state since each individual consumes more than one kilo of plastic per week and Yucatecan society must work together to reduce the use of plastics.

The specialist did not hesitate to point out that in Mérida and the rest of the state the waste is increasing and the way of getting rid of it is inadequate. Plastic waste is flooding the streets and therefore the water table.

The expert explained that the material contaminates the aquifer, which causes alterations in marine biology, affects the production of marine species, and causes diseases due to the ingestion of contaminated products.
