Between November and December, Río Lagartos becomes the ideal setting to observe these majestic birds in their natural habitat.

Flamingos, known for their characteristic pink color, concentrate in large numbers in the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, where they find a perfect environment for feeding.

The certified federal tourist guide, Ángel Navarro, explained that during the migration period, these birds seek new adventures such as exploring new feeding sites.

“These specimens usually go to Cuba, Florida, Guatemala, and much of the Caribbean and they do this only to travel and look for new feeding areas, but also to see new places,” he said.

He pointed out that these birds have found in Río Lagartos everything they need to live, adopting this Yucatecan port as their home.

During this season, they usually change places and ecosystems. It is like us when we go on vacation. However, they do not find another place like Río Lagartos because this is where they are born, the most special thing is that they come here to court, they fall in love, they lay their eggs and then the chicks learn to fly and that is the cycle.

The vibrant color of flamingos comes from the carotenoids they consume by feeding on small crustaceans and algae present in the area. This phenomenon, in addition to being a visual delight, is an indicator of the health of the ecosystem.

At the beginning of next year, the courtship season among flamingos will begin, a unique visual spectacle, “between 50 and 100 flamingos come together to dance, they all dance together, they move from side to side, they move their wings and their beaks and they go falling in love, females and males do it, they flirt,” he said.

This is how in Río Lagartos the flamingos have known how to make this Yucatecan paradise their own.
