Leones de Yucatán has officially announced that Dominican Ramón Santiago will be the team’s new manager for the 2025 Mexican Baseball League campaign.
The club’s executive president, Erick Arellano, and the sports directorate, after several interviews with candidates for manager, opted for Ramón, 45, due to his extensive career that includes seven years belonging to an MLB organization as a coach and his great leadership capacity within the clubhouse.
“Ramón comes with extensive experience having been part of a Major League Technical Staff in the United States for several years, he knows what it takes to win and lead a roster. He is full of energy and passion, we know that this will help him have a great relationship with veterans and young players,” said sports director David Cortés.
Santiago, born on August 31, 1979, in Las Matas de Farfán, Dominican Republic, was trained in the Major Leagues under the tutelage of managers such as A.J. Hinch and Ron Gardenhire.
As part of his professional career, after retiring as a baseball player, the following year in 2018 he was named first base coach of the Detroit Tigers. A year later he made the transition to third base, a position he held until 2022, and then remained within the organization until 2024.
Within his interesting resume, he was also a bench coach with the Toros del Este in the Professional Baseball League of the Dominican Republic.
Previously he was also with Leones del Escogido in the same position and also defended the colors of his country directing runners from third base in international tournaments such as the 2023 World Classic and 2024 Premier.
As a player, the infielder participated in more than 10 seasons in the Major Leagues, shining in positions such as shortstop and second base, seeing action in 920 games in total with the Detroit Tigers, Seattle Mariners, and Cincinnati Reds.
