A total of 195 deaths in traffic accidents have been registered in Yucatan after 9 months, a figure very similar to that of the previous year when there were 199. Just on October 1, like today, in 2023, the 200th fatality rate was reached.

The “detail” is that the number of victims on board motorcycles is much higher, since in 2024 there were 122, while the previous year there were 107 in the same period, for an increase of 14 percent in mortality.

For now, 74.7 percent of the total for 2023 is already there, so, if the fatality rate is maintained, the 261 deaths could be equaled or exceeded. On average, a Yucatecan dies every 33 hours and 42 minutes. The comparison with other years reiterates the alarming figures of the present.

In 2022, “only” 164 deaths were counted at the end of September and almost 10 years ago, in 2015, there were 156 after 274 days.

At that time, the counter of deceased motorcyclists marked 48, 39.3 percent of the current year. And the difference with the second place on the list was not much, since cyclists shared the position with travelers or companions by adding 30 fatal cases. The statistics were completed by 24 drivers and 23 pedestrians.

The 122 motorcyclists who died this year were followed by 21 drivers, 20 pedestrians, 18 travelers or companions, and 14 cyclists. This marked contrast has a lot to do with the disproportionate increase in the vehicle fleet in the State.

In 2015, the number of vehicles was 674,366, adding units of all sizes and functions, according to the National Injury Observatory of that year, with figures from Inegi.

Likewise, from June 2023 to June 2024, the number went from one million 34 thousand 153 units to one million 102 thousand 172, which represented an increase of 6.58 percent, according to data from the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP).

For this reason, road engineer René Flores Ayora appealed to everyone equally. “I appeal to the responsibility of motorcyclists, motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians since it is up to them that we all reduce deaths from traffic accidents in Yucatán, which are preventable and avoidable and have a cause,” he concluded.
