Lobster fishing on the Yucatan coast is declining

The president of the Federation of Fishing Cooperative Societies of the Center-West of the State, Mariano Canul Uicab, reported that the lobster catch remains low after three years of good catch of the species, this 2024 has been bad for this important fishery.

He pointed out that last season, which runs from July 1, 2023, to February 28, 2024, there was a catch of 680 tons of lobster, it was an excellent season; the goal from July 1, 2024, to February 28, 2025, is to reach a volume of 700 tons of the crustacean.

He clarified that although last season, the capture of lobster was good, the price of the kilo of the species did not improve, which remained between 400 and 430 pesos, which was not profitable for the social fishing sector.

He added that in 2024, the price of a kilo of lobster varies between 400, 430, and 450 pesos, but the price does not improve and what is worse, the capture of the crustacean is low, both in the ports of the East and in the Center-West of the Yucatecan coast.

Canul Uicab asserted that they hope that with the arrival of the first cold fronts that cause north winds on the Yucatecan coast, the seabed will throw the lobster close to the surface so that the catch volume increases; as the waters of the Caribbean have a high temperature, the species moves away to deeper waters, which are cold and hide in caves, the confidence is that this important fishery will improve.
