On Thursday, September 5, the first cruise ship of the month arrived, the Carnival Valor, on a terrible day for workers due to the few passengers who remained in the port.
According to official data from the National Port System Administration (Asipona) of Progreso, the ship arrived at 6:51 in the morning after a stay in Cozumel and set sail at 3 in the afternoon bound for New Orleans.
It brought 3,184 passengers and 1,137 crew members, for a total of 4,321 visitors, of which only 100 to 200 cruise passengers stayed in Progreso on one of the worst days of this year.
From early hours, merchants from the traditional boardwalk arrived to set up their furniture and rent palapas, umbrellas, lounge chairs, and masseuses to provide their services. Artisans, clothes and souvenir vendors, and other servers set up shop eagerly for the ship’s arrival. However, they were disappointed by the absence of visitors.
Earnings were minimal, as only a few chairs and lounge chairs were occupied.
Street vendors had a hard time offering their products because foreigners were not interested in buying them. With this setback, the commercial sector only has four opportunities to earn income. The earliest date will be Tuesday the 10th when the Carnival Valor arrives for the second time.
