Authorities found a clandestine crematorium with human remains in a residential area on the outskirts of Cancun, according to local authorities.

The Quintana Roo state prosecutor’s office confirmed the discovery after complaints filed by groups searching for missing people.

In an operation, a roofless construction used as a crematorium was located and secured, a statement from the institution detailed.

The Verdad, Memoria y Justicia collective denounced the existence of the site after charred bones were located there.

“There are human remains, we have to genetically analyze those remains,” prosecutor Raciel López Salazar told the press.

The place is a rudimentary construction that nevertheless has a video surveillance camera system, according to the prosecutor’s office.

Mexico has about 100,000 reported cases of disappearances, which have increased especially since 2006 when violence linked to drug trafficking intensified.

In different areas of Mexico, clandestine graves have been found, some with several dozen bodies. This month marks a decade since the disappearance of 43 students from the rural teachers’ school of Ayotzinapa, in the state of Guerrero, one of the most emblematic cases that has caused global outrage.
