The promotion of tourism in Mexico in Europe continues to advance, and on this occasion, Quintana Roo is positioned as one of the most attractive destinations for travelers from Sweden, with a focus on places such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum.
During the recent visit of the Secretary of Tourism of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marqués, to Sweden, these sun and beach destinations were a central part of the strategy to attract tourists and strengthen tourism investment.
The presentation of the seminar Así es México, which took place in Sweden as part of the Knock on Doors operation, highlighted the tourist offer of Quintana Roo. Swedish tourists have shown interest in destinations that offer sun, beach, and wellness experiences, with Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum being the preferred destinations for winter trips.
Among the trends that mark the preference of Swedish tourists towards these destinations are:
Sun and beach. The search for getaways to warm destinations during the Swedish winter months is one of the motivators for choosing Quintana Roo.
Sustainability. Swedish travelers increasingly value tourist experiences that respect the environment, something that Quintana Roo has promoted in its destinations.
Wellness. Tourism focused on wellness, which includes spas, retreats, and relaxation activities, is in places like Tulum, known for its focus on healthy living.
Another factor that drives Swedes to visit Quintana Roo is their interest in Mexican gastronomy, especially with the Swedish tradition of “taco Friday,” in which families prepare tacos at home.
This culinary link is reinforced by the growing reputation of Tulum and Mérida as gastronomic meccas, where you can enjoy authentic flavors of Mexican cuisine.
Economic impact of Swedish tourism in Quintana Roo
In 2023, more than 30 thousand Swedish tourists arrived in Mexico by air, generating an economic impact of almost 34 million dollars. During the first half of 2024, more than 14 thousand tourists from Sweden were registered, with an expenditure of more than 17 million dollars.
Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum continue to be the main destinations for these travelers, who contribute significantly to the economic growth of the region. During the visit, the possibility of opening direct flights between Stockholm and Mexico was discussed, which would further facilitate the arrival of Swedish tourists to destinations such as Cancún and Playa del Carmen.
