On Wednesday, September 18, a van carrying construction workers from the Maya Train lost control while traveling on the road leading to the Tulum International Airport; the incident resulted in the death of one worker and several more injured, which raises concerns about safety on this road.
According to the information provided by the authorities, the accident occurred at kilometer 8, when the Chevrolet Cheyenne-type van, with license plate number PFY-0533, was traveling towards the airport.
The driver lost control of the steering wheel and ended up on the median strip, where the unit overturned, while the workers were thrown out, leaving one person dead and four people injured, who were transferred to hospitals by different ambulances.
This is the third fatal accident in less than two months on the same route. On August 17, an ambulance from the Ministry of National Defense overturned, resulting in one person dead and two injured. Later, on August 30, another vehicle accident claimed the life of an individual.
The recurring fatalities on this 17-kilometer road, which connects the airport with Federal Highway 307, have led various sectors to demand stricter measures to guarantee the safety of drivers and passengers.
The Olmeca-Maya-Mexica Airport, Railway, Auxiliary and Related Services Group (GAFSACOMM) has been asked to implement strategies to limit the speed of vehicles in the area.
