With a cake and the delivery of 11 recognitions to employees for different years of service, the Bici Ruta program celebrated 18 years of creation, of being a social space that has encouraged healthy coexistence and the union of Merida families throughout almost two decades.
Jesús Aguilar y Aguilar, Technical Secretary of Sports of the city council of Mérida, recalled that the Bici Ruta was born on August 20, 2006, during the administration of Manuel Fuentes Alcocer and, for it to see the light, they had to convince many people at that time to close the main avenue of the city.
“At that time, Mayor Manuel Fuentes Alcocer had the great task of creating the program. At first, it was on the west side of Paseo de Montejo. In 2013, it moved to the east side, as it continues today, to benefit the users who come with shade,” mentioned the municipal official.
He mentioned that although it is a social program that has been adapted over the years, its objective of being a recreational space to promote healthy coexistence and unity of Merida families is maintained. This objective has even been adopted by the visitors who come to Mérida during the holiday season.
Aguilar y Aguilar said that the average attendance on a Bici Ruta Sunday is between 4,500 and 5,400. In addition to being able to ride a bicycle throughout Paseo de Montejo, there are also shows and activities for children and extra services such as doctors and workshop services to repair units.
He highlighted that although the organization of this municipal scheme involves around 20 people, there are 90 more people among social service volunteers, suppliers, and bicycle rental companies who make the program that is part of the city Sunday day possible.
In addition to celebrating the 18th year of the program with a cake, the municipal official gave recognition to 11 employees for their different years of service in this program, such as Ligia Gómez Aragón, José Rivero Turriza and Edwin González Jiménez, who have been working the 18 years of the program.
Also receiving recognition were Pablo Mendoza Benítez for nine years of service; Guillermo Andrade Canché for eight years; Javier Novelo Uicab for seven years; Edgar Marfil Robertos for two years; Adder Arbel Campos Casanova for one year; Enrique Dzib Varguez and Juan Carlos Cetina Briceño for seven months and Juan Ferrer Liahut for five months.
