To bring together producers who are dedicated to the management of Meliponina bees in the State, to share experiences, knowledge, and good practices, as well as to strengthen networks of collaboration and mutual support, on the 15th of this month, the State Meeting of Meliponinae People of Yucatan will be held, at the facilities of the Secretariat of Economic Development and Labor (Sefoet).

With this event, the aim is to promote the sustainable development of Meliponinae in the state, through the active participation of its main protagonists, to generate information about its significance.

“We know the impact that this activity has in the state, this issue is extremely important in Yucatan, especially these endemic bees and everything around them is part of the worldview that we have had as a Mayan culture for many years,” said Diana Pérez Jaumá, head of the Secretariat of Sustainable Development (SDS) of Yucatan.

Around 100 participants are expected to attend the event, in a project focused on biodiversity conservation, food security, and rural development.

“It is important to have spaces like this to contribute ideas, knowledge, strategies that add to the activity in the state, and not only in the state, but also have an impact at the Peninsula level,” said Rodrigo Navarro Meneses, beekeeper, and member of the organizing committee.

“Topics were included that represent a challenge and give us a lesson to begin to generate actions for the future of the sector, correct what is happening, and prevent what could occur in the coming years. Aspects of an environmental, organizational, management, and marketing nature will be discussed at work tables,” he added.

During the meeting, José Javier Quezada Euán, a researcher at the Autonomous University of Yucatán (UADY), will give the conference “Effects of heat stress on stingless bees in Yucatán.”

Likewise, the specialist, Irma Gómez González, will speak about “How do pesticides affect bees and what can we do to prevent damage.”

In addition, working groups will be held with the idea of identifying the main problems of the activity in Yucatán, with dialogues on the areas of concern and emerging attention, along with suggested solutions.
