As part of the promotional actions to increase air connectivity in Merida, in the coming months the Merida International Airport (MID) “Licenciado Manuel Crescencio Rejón” will launch new flights to destinations such as Tijuana, Baja California; and Los Angeles, California, in the United States, to continue with the growth route.

The head of the Secretariat for Tourism Development in Yucatan (Sefotur), Michelle Fridman Hirsch, highlighted that these routes are confirmed from now on, but will be in the hands of the new administration of the executive branch, which will take office starting on Tuesday, October 1 of this year.

She added that during this six-year term, the Merida air terminal underwent an expansion project to receive more passengers each month, given the solid growth it registers each year in terms of the number of passengers.

“The airport capacity is already much larger, more than double what it was before the pandemic, but we have also worked hard with airlines to increase the supply of seats and routes, we have 67 percent more routes available and 97 percent more seats on international routes,” he said.

He pointed out that the arrival of the Viva Aerobus Hub for the first time in Yucatán has been a “watershed” to land more routes that connect Yucatecans not only with tourist markets but also in commercial and social dynamics, which undoubtedly represents great benefits for the state economy.

As we reported, so far this year, that is, from January to July, the Mérida International Airport (MID) has already registered a total of 2 million 107 thousand 86 passengers, which meant an upward variation of 0.4 percent compared to the 2 million 98 thousand 352 of the same period, but in 2023.

The MID currently operates with 20 routes, of which 14 are national and 6 international. The latter are to destinations such as Miami, Orlando, Texas, and Dallas, in the United States; Havana, Cuba; and Guatemala.

As for the reports of the summer vacation period, Fridman Hirsch reported that although the state’s history reflects that it has never been the strongest season of the year, good numbers have been found, especially on the coast, where until a few years ago there was not so much tourist offer.

“There was a lot of supply for Yucatecans who had their houses on the beach there, but it was not necessarily the hotel supply that the state has today and we are very pleased to see not only cruise passengers who enjoy the new infrastructure of Progreso, but also people who stay at different points on the coast,” she stressed.

The state official shared that during this holiday period, the ports of Progreso, Celestún, Sisal, Telchac Puerto, Río Lagartos, and Cuyo have had a significant movement of visitors, who arrived in Yucatán, either by air, through the airport, or by road transport.
