The mayor of Mérida, Alejandro Ruz Castro, inaugurated the first stage of the new Balam Balam felinarium at the Animaya Zoological Park with an investment of 58 million pesos and will house eight different species of felines when fully completed.
It has eight areas for various species, some native to the state. The latter also contributes to animal care and the care of the species since there will be a reproduction system attached to the highest standards.
There is a project to create an exclusive hospital for big cats. However, it will be the next administration that will analyze and decide what to do next. The mayor stressed that Mérida’s zoos are free and will continue that way with a new attraction.
The new felinarium has a unique design in the region since visitors would admire the specimens from two perspectives: at ground level through glass windows or have a panoramic view from above.
There is only one feline in this first stage of the felinarium. It is Gucci, a white lion just over a year old. He will have an adaptation period of approximately 45 days, and it will be with three females. Among the species are the African lion, Bengal tiger, jaguar, ocelot, jaguarundi, lynx, puma, and leopard.
