“Mangroves from Dzilam de Bravo to Santa Clara have been filled in by passing into the hands of the real estate mafia, which intends to build buildings.”

Regardless of environmental laws, heavy machinery began filling in the mangrove from Dzilam de Bravo to Santa Clara, in an unprecedented ecological devastation to transform that protected area into another area of the “new Riviera of Mexico.”

Since Saturday, August 24, fishermen have asked for the intervention of the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection and without the authorities doing anything, they only see how the destruction of the mangrove advances with impunity.

The residents of Dzilam de Bravo showed that the area of greatest destruction is located at kilometer 27, between that port and Santa Clara.

They reveal that behind this filling of the mangrove is a well-known politician, from a family of businessmen, who uses nominees to carry out this ecological crime.

The devastation of the mangroves on the beaches of Dzilam de Bravo has sparked great indignation among fishermen and residents of the community, who accuse politicians and businessmen of being behind a plan to illegally appropriate these lands.

According to the complaints, politicians linked to the National Action Party of Yucatan, in complicity with the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa), are allegedly falsifying documents in the municipality of Dzidzantún to steal lands from Dzilam de Bravo, completely ignoring the environmental protection laws of that area.

The accusations indicate that since Saturday, August 24, residents of the area reported to Profepa the use of heavy machinery in protected areas, where much of the local flora has been destroyed, including the mangrove, which is a species protected by law.

And precisely, those affected will demand that the Financial Investigation Unit explain where one of the front men, with the last name Suárez, got the money to buy a 30 million pesos mansion and how this summer he also acquired a 36-foot yacht, brand new, with a price of more than 8 million pesos, which he anchored near the beach residence known as Moonplace.

Locals indicate that until 2018, the now prominent real estate businessman had a telephone booth business in Mérida’s Itzimná neighborhood, next to the Eloísa Patrón school and earned 36 thousand a month. In the last six years, as a government advisor, he had an average salary of 90 thousand a month, which means that, even without spending one peso of his income, his savings would be 6 million 480 thousand pesos in one year, much less than the cost of the yacht alone.

A satellite photograph set off the alarm on Sunday, August 18, when it was confirmed that, despite being an area protected by national and international laws, the mangrove area on the North coast passed into the hands of the so-called “Real Estate Mafia,” which is destroying and dividing up land along the coast of Yucatan, from Telchac Puerto to Santa Clara.

Dzilam de Bravo is 107 kilometers (66 miles) northeast of Merida (INEGI)

According to anonymous , the devastation of the flora and mangroves on the beaches of Dzilam de Bravo is based on the alleged falsification of documents from the Dzidzantún City Council, to take these lands away from local fishermen.

The fishermen of Dzilam de Bravo responded that the affected area has no relation to Dzidzantún whatsoever, but the real estate developers claim to have legal possession of the mangroves.

“Since Saturday, August 24th, we notified Profepa of the illegal use of machinery in protected areas, destroying the entire mangrove. “Everyone turns a blind eye, these businessmen say they are protected by people from the government, that is why they do what they want,” said one of the fishermen from Dzilam de Bravo, who requested anonymity for fear of reprisals.

The community is alarmed, not only by the destruction of the mangrove, which is vital for the livelihood of local fishermen, but also by the flagrant violation of environmental laws and the abuse of power by those who should protect the natural heritage and communal lands.

Residents demand that the destruction of the mangroves be stopped immediately and that those involved be thoroughly investigated, before it is too late to save what remains of the Protected Natural Area in Dzilam de Bravo.
