The depth of the cenote that a little over a week ago swallowed a monumental ceiba tree remains a mystery. A group of divers explored the sinkhole last Sunday but could not reach the bottom of the cavity.
The explorers managed to reach a depth of 131 feet, where the Ceiba tree remains collapsed. That was the maximum distance they could arrive at.
According to the information obtained, the divers entered the body of water to explore the space and find out how many meters deep it was. However, they were not able to reach the bottom.
The monumental ceiba that collapsed is about 40 meters deep. The divers could not advance any further, and they emerged again. The explorers and experts believe the cenote could be more than 196 feet deep.
Other information that came to light after the divers’ incursion was that on the walls inside the cavity, they could see the entrances to some caverns possibly connected to other bodies of water. However, it is unknown how far they go.
People who have their houses a few meters from the cenote’s vault were scared last August 4 when they heard the roar produced by the collapse of a part of the ceiling of the cenote, where a ceiba tree grew that went into the water and disappeared into its depths.
The area where the mouth of the cenote remained delimited with tape, and according to some neighbors, they have seen several people who get very close to the hole that collapsed and are in constant danger, taking into account that there are parts of the roof that are only about 30 centimeters thick so that it can collapse at any time.
The neighbors considered that the state or federal authorities should intervene as soon as possible to develop a tourism project that benefits the town. They also commented that authorities must demolish the rest of the cavity roof before any accident occurs due to the danger of walking in the surroundings.
