The “Identidad y otras Erratas” art exhibition is inaugurated by Yucatecan artist Ileana Garma, it will last through November.

At a time when social media, digital platforms, and mobile devices record and store our activities, Ileana Garma presents the exhibition Identity and Other Memory Mistakes in response to the mechanization of accessing our memories.

The opening of the exhibition, which took place in the gallery of the “José María Iturralde Traconis” Theater in the municipality of Valladolid as part of the work of decentralization of goods and services of the current administration of Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal, was attended by the head of the Secretariat of Culture and the Arts (Sedeculta), Loreto Villanueva Trujillo.

The official said the artist “challenges us to look beyond appearances and to reflect on what is within us through these portraits, inviting us to discover the stories and emotions hidden in faces and people.”

“It invites us to look beyond the superficial, to discover the uniqueness of others, and to open ourselves to the diversity of experiences that art offers us, not only as a visual representation but also as a window to an inner world, a space where shapes and colors become a language of their own,” she added.

For her part, the artist explained that her proposal arises from criticizing the current mechanization of the world in which we live, where memory has become something very standardized. Social networks often suggest to us what to remember and what one was doing at some point in the past, instead of being an accident.

Identity and Other Mistakes of Memory is a retrospective made up of 18 oil paintings on canvas that she worked on over six years in sizes from 25 by 25 centimeters to pieces of more than one meter by 80 centimeters where the simple, every day, the intimately familiar, the tedious and the monotonous turns it into something universal and transcendental.
