Several weeks after part of the vault of the Xocén cenote collapsed in the police station of the same name – due to the fall of a ceiba tree, considered a sacred tree -, the place remains open, with the risk of a person or animal falling when approaching to the site, say the neighbors who live in the surrounding area and say that they are afraid because it could be dangerous.
Families who live in front of the hole stated that, so far, they do not know of any project. They said no state or federal authority has come forward to inform what they plan to do with the hole that has remained open since the collapse.
The neighbors explained that they have seen people who claim to be diving experts arrive, get in, and then say that the bottom of the cenote is impressive. Although, no one has said what they plan to do.
They recalled that they proposed a project to exploit it for tourism, providing all the security to those who visit the site, including finishing opening the roof to prevent another part from collapsing at some point.
They commented there is fear among the families who live around the place. Some have small children, and one could approach and fall into the water.
The tapes around the hole look destroyed, so only a few police officers are on the lookout. The place represents a danger to those who live in the surrounding area.
Cyclists and motorcyclists also frequently pass by the place, so they fear that another part of the vault could fall, especially on the eastern end, where they have seen that the thickness of the floor is only about 50 centimeters thick. It won’t hold much weight.
