Catholic bishop fears damage to churches in Yucatán due to constant rains

In this rainy season, the old churches of Yucatán are experiencing humidity problems. Nevertheless, their structure is not damaged, says the auxiliary bishop of Yucatán, Monsignor Pedro Mena Díaz.

Despite the rains that began last June, no damage like that which occurred in the Tekax church exists, the clergyman points out.

Priests, sacred art architects, and people from parishes call to the community to report any damage to the structures. The experts suggest and report since there are still several months until the season ends.

We have astonishing temples, but old. The humidity, heat, and radiation they receive are severe, says Monsignor Mena Díaz.

Some people told me that due to the radiation that occurred in the hottest months, the roofs that had been waterproofed, even with the best technique, dried out. The job was for five years and did not last even one, laments the prelate

Bishop Pedro Mena indicates that the climate in Yucatán affects the buildings, so they must be constantly vigilant.

Experts also recommend to monitor the grass growing in its structures. We must remove the grass using lime and sand and then apply cement so that it does not continue to grow, he points out.

They did not detect any damage in the churches, as the one reported in the Tekax church, the most severe so far, according to the bishop.

In other cases, the problem is humidity, like in the Cathedral, but we are trying to address it. When the dry season comes, they must intervene in these buildings.

At the beginning of last May, in the San Juan Bautista de Tekax church, part of the ceiling and part of a semicircular arch collapsed, leaving large pieces of debris inside the building.
