The United Independent Rescuers collective demands jail for the buggy driver who hit a horse in the streets of downtown Mérida.

As we reported before, on July 7, a video went viral on social media, in which the man is hitting a horse and pulling it violently on a street in the historic center of Mérida. The video caused outrage among users.

Days later, the Union of Drivers and Small Carriage Owners of Yucatán expelled the driver from the association. However, activists consider that this sanction is not enough.

Elsa Arceo Medina, representative of the United Independent Rescuers collective, pointed out that this measure is not a real punishment. “We want him to pay in prison because otherwise, they will forget the incident.”

She stressed that groups are closely following this case of animal abuse, and she warned they will not allow the punishment to be only the expulsion of the coach driver from a group.

Elsa Arceo reported that on Saturday, July 13, they will hold a peaceful demonstration under the name “Justice for Horses in Mérida,” in which they will ask for real punishment for the abuser of the horse. The demonstration will be at 5 p.m. Activists from Mexico City, Morelos, and other states will attend because his case went viral nationwide.
