«It is an alarming situation»: exclaimed Luis Cepeda Cruz, former president of the Regional Cattle Union of Eastern Yucatan (UGROY).
Cattle producer and former president of the Regional Cattle Union of Eastern Yucatan (UGROY), Luis Cepeda Cruz, said that cows, calves, and bulls have died due to the intense drought; even some female cattle have had abortions, all of these animals are seriously affected by the lack of rain and the lack of pastures, which is their main food.
He indicated that the situation is very complicated for large and small cattle ranchers in the State because, despite feeding their cattle with fodder, bales, Taiwan grass, and balanced feed, it has not been enough to prevent the herd from getting sick and dying due to other adverse weather conditions.
Cepeda Cruz recalled that in 1997 a similar period was experienced in Yucatan when the drought lasted many months and the same thing happened between 2010 and 2011; in both cases, several animals died due to adverse natural conditions and lack of pastures.
The former president of the UGROY indicated that the only thing left to wait for is for the rains to start falling so that the thin cattle can regain the weight and quality of their meat, become fat, and stop dying due to high temperatures and lack of rain.
