Government and airport authorities announced that the airline Viva Aerobus will offer two new routes at the Mérida International Airport, one to Tijuana, Baja California, and another to Los Angeles, California, United States.

At the Yucatán International Congress Center, Michelle Fridman, head of the Tourism Promotion Secretariat (Sefotur) explained that the route to Tijuana is a renewal, since the service was previously offered by the airline Volaris, but it was canceled and now Viva Aerobus will operate these routes.

This route will have four flights a week: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, leaving Mérida at 8:10 at night with a half-hour stopover in El Bajío, at the León airport, and leaving Tijuana at 8:10 in the morning with a stopover in Monterrey.

On the other hand, the route to Los Angeles will, for now, only be seasonal for the holiday season and will have a weekly frequency starting December 18.

“It is a route that we have been pursuing for years, it is a complex route because of how long it is and we are going to do the first experiment this December season,” Fridman explained.

The secretary thanked Viva Aerobus for making this temporary commitment to attract more tourism from the west coast of the United States to the state of Yucatan.

During his speech, Walter Castro Novelo, director of corporate communications for Viva Aerobus, highlighted that with these two new destinations the airline offers a total of 16 destinations in Yucatan and recalled that flights to Orlando and Miami begin operations at the beginning of July.

In this regard, Governor Mauricio Vila celebrated the results in terms of tourism in the current administration and highlighted that historical maximum levels in tourist arrivals have been reached.

He said that it is necessary for the government to continue working hand in hand with private initiative and tourists to promote the sector.
