“There are more of us who read” is an event of great importance for the city of Campeche,” reported Roberto Iván Alcalá Ferráez, president of the Civil Association “Por Campeche Somos Más”, when presenting an initiative to collect 14 thousand books to promote reading.
The objective is to promote citizen participation to generate social awareness and encourage interest in reading in children, young people, and adults, creating a traffic-free space where participants can enjoy the written word.
The initiative was born in Europe, specifically in Madrid, with a group of artists, “in response to this accelerated world in which we live now,” he said.
“In Campeche, we cannot stay behind; “We are a modern city with very strong traditions and in ‘There are more of us who read’ we are rescuing true gems from forgotten libraries,” he stated.
The initiative is divided into two stages, the first consists of collecting 14 thousand books, and the second will culminate in an event that will tentatively take place on the 8th 53rd, and 55th streets in the Historic Center of the city, within the framework of a festival cultural.
“To date, we have received donations from 61 people and collected 3,650 books, which means that we already have a quarter of the goal in just one month of work,” explained Alcalá Ferráez.
In addition, he announced the activity “In the footsteps of the book,” which consists of placing books in strategic points of the city so that reading reaches more people. Sheila Rojas, the Culture member of Somos Más, called for volunteers to actively participate on the day of the event, donate books, and disseminate information on the association’s social networks. “You can not only participate by donating books but also volunteer on the day of the event.
