The Yucatan tourism sector registered a general hotel occupancy of 61% in March 2024, according to data from the Mexican Association of Hotels in Yucatan (AMHY).

This figure is similar to that recorded in the same month last year. However, when analyzing the performance of tourist destinations, variations are observed, according to the business organization.

Mérida topped the list with 63% hotel occupancy during March, coinciding with the Easter holiday period, while Izamal stood out with 53.85% occupancy, becoming one of the most popular destinations in the state.

The beaches are the third most visited destination, with 50% occupancy. Valladolid registered 49.27%, while Chichén Itzá reached 43.25%. These data reflect the diversification of the tourism offered in Yucatán, which covers different types of destinations beyond the traditional ones.

Juan José Martín Pacheco, president of the AMHY, pointed out that the tourist offer is diversified, in consequence, the number of rooms is increasing. To calculate the statistics, he said, sampling was carried out in 93 hotels, with 5,725 rooms, of which 67 lodging centers are in Mérida and 26 in the interior of the state.

“With these figures, we can see that the Yucatan tourism sector maintains stability with a certain increase in some places that have led to a better economic impact in the various regions of the state”, he added.

The leader pointed out that Yucatan’s tourist destinations register good influxes on weekends and during periods of rest or vacations, which shows that tourist activity has rebounded but they must keep a constant rate of visitors.

Hotel occupancy generates an economic impact in the regions of the state, benefiting local communities. However, the sector faces the challenge of maintaining a constant flow of visitors throughout the year, and not only during holiday periods and weekends, when spikes are recorded.

To achieve this, authorities and the private sector implement promotion strategies aimed at new markets and segments, both national and international.

Martín Pacheco emphasized the need to focus on new segments to maintain the diversified supply. Despite the challenges, Yucatán’s tourism industry is in a stable position, with occupancy similar to the previous year and positive trends in certain destinations. The diversification of the offer, effective promotion, and attention to new market trends will be key to boosting the growth of the tourism sector in Yucatan, he stated.
