The Gastronomic Federation of Yucatán will open honey export channels to Portugal, to promote the growth of beekeeping activity on which many families in the rural area of Yucatán depend.
Within the framework of Bee Day, the president of the organization, Carlos Aguirre Aguilar, made a call to value the importance of this pollinator for humanity, to take care of it and preserve it, since they are currently threatened by deforestation, burning, and climate change.
Frank Sosa Candila, vice president of the Yucatan Gastronomic Federation, who is a beekeeper, highlighted that bees provide high-quality foods such as honey, royal jelly, and pollen, they make cosmetics, medicines, candles, and other products such as beeswax, propolis, and bee venom.
Both business leaders stressed that Yucatan honey meets the quality requirements established internationally, hence Portugal’s interest in acquiring this product.
They indicated that during the tour of businessmen and chefs of the federation through Europe, negotiations were opened, through the Mexican Embassy in Portugal, with businessmen and the government of that country for the export of Yucatecan honey.
“It is expected that between July and August, the Portuguese ambassador to Mexico will arrive in Yucatan and subsequently a delegation of businessmen on a trade mission, to learn more about the state and see what other business options can be carried out,” highlighted the business leader.
On the tour of Europe, he said, they took ingredients that are used in Yucatecan cuisine, as well as honey and other products that managed to conquer the palates of Europeans. They sparked interest in acquiring them for consumption.
“Due to the quality and flavor of the honey produced in Yucatan, it is valued in international markets, and thanks to the quality and safety of the product, it is one of the most valued in the world,” he highlighted.
The business leader invited small producers to join this export project which will help improve the economy of those who depend on this activity.
