After six months without the Yucatán Human Rights Commission appointing a head, on Tuesday, May 28th, the state’s congress finally elected María Guadalupe Méndez Correa to occupy the position.
She is the first woman to head said organization, she obtained 21 votes in favor during said extraordinary session, she took protest in the legislative chamber and promised to fulfill the task.
Méndez Correa has a Master’s degree in Human Rights. Within her professional career she has served as director of the Justice Center for Women of the State Attorney General’s Office.
The new president of Codhey was also director of the Center to Prevent and Eliminate Discrimination in Yucatán (Cepredy), where she launched a Diploma in Gender Studies.
This autonomous body remained headless for 6 months, because of a federal protection that the legislative branch resorted to.
